I can't believe it's March!!  I hope you all had a lovely Winter Break!   Looks like we are going to get a lot of snow tonight and tomorrow.  I don't know about you, but I'm ready for Spring!!!

This week we started a new unit in Journeys.  The anchor text is Aero and Officer Mike, an informational text piece about a police officer and his K-9 dog.  The kids will be exploring how working animals help people.  We will be looking at words with a vowel plus the /r/ sound in spelling and learning how to make sure we use the correct pronoun to match the verb in our sentences.  We will also explore the prefixes in- and im-.  We will be very busy in literacy this week. 

In math, we are learning more about multiplication and operations.  This week we will explore math stories using multiplication and breaking them into parts to figure out what factor is missing by making multiplication and division diagrams.  We wil…

This week we are continuing to study fractions and multiplication strategies in Math.  The students will take the Unit 5 math assessment on Tuesday, Feb. 13.  We will review on Friday and Monday before the test.  Monday the students will have a review packet they can look at for homework.  

We began our next unit in Journey's on Tuesday.  We read "Tops and Bottoms", a trickster tale.  Students will be learning about homophones in our spelling lesson and we will be looking at quotation marks and we will review past, present, and future tense.   Spelling homework began on Tuesday night.  Students should complete FOUR spelling assignments from their spelling menu.  The spelling test will be on Wednesday, Feb. 14.

This week we are working on recognizing our helper facts (facts we know that can help us figure out ones we don't know), using the doubling strategy in multiplication, and finding patterns in products.
In literacy we began Lesson 11 and the anchor text is Technology Wins the Game.  We are learning about how sports engineers use the inventing process to make sports better.  Students are enjoying how this lesson ties into our invention and small machines units in science.
Spelling words came home Monday.  Students will do four spelling choices for homework and will take their spelling test on Friday, February 2.  The spelling rule this week is the vowel sound in the word "joy".  We will look at the rule of changing -y to -ies when making plurals.

Everyone is settling in nicely after the holiday break.  We took our STAR Reading tests on Friday and will take our STAR Math tests on Tuesday.  

This week we are excited to start our unit on Simple Machines!  The students and I are going to love this unit.  We will explore force and motion along with Rube Goldberg mechanisms, inclined plane, lever, pulley, screw, wedge, and wheel and axel.  We will have some exciting experiments happening during the upcoming weeks.

In Literacy, our new Journeys unit is on inventions.  The anchor text is titled Young Thomas Edison.  Spelling will include words with au, aw, al, and o (the vowel sound in the word talk).  In grammar, we will be studying subject and object pronouns.  We will continue working on opinion writing.  We will begin a new spelling lesson on Tuesday.  Students should complete 4 spelling choices and will have a spelling test the following Tue…
